What made you choose UHY Hacker Young?
I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and friendliness of the staff at all levels.
The chance to work with a wide range of companies of differing sizes and industry was also an attraction.
Do you tend to work late into the evenings or a lot of weekends?
When an audit has tight deadlines, it is sometimes necessary to work extra hours which can include weekends, but this is not a regular occurrence.
However, during exam periods you need to be willing to sacrifice evenings and weekends in order to pass.
What makes a good auditor/accountant?
I think a good auditor enjoys working in a team, has good attention to detail, the ability to concentrate for long periods, and has the confidence and inter personal skills to communicate with clients.
In terms of studying for the ACA qualification, discipline, determination, and good time management skills are imperative.
What is the atmosphere like at UHY Hacker Young?
UHY Hacker Young has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, where you can enjoy yourself whilst meeting your business objectives.
They are also very supportive of trainees, providing valuable on the job training, advice and support.
What do you like most about your role?
I like the fact that I am not confined to one office all year. I love visiting different companies at various locations, and meeting new people which keeps things fresh and interesting.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
Easily the most challenging aspect of being a trainee is studying whilst carrying out a full time job. The learning curve is the most intense I have experienced, but I really enjoy the challenge and it keeps me on my toes.
What do you hope to do when you have finished your qualification?
Once I qualify, I would like to gain further experience in accountancy before looking at opportunities to live and work abroad. There are many countries around the world that recognise the ACA qualification, and I love experiencing different cultures.
Is it difficult to balance your exams and work commitments?
In a word…YES!! Whilst it is certainly achievable to succeed in both as so many people do, the amount of work you need to do should not be underestimated. You have to have good organisational and time management skills, but also be willing to make sacrifices; but the feeling of success in terms of exam results and positive feed back from colleagues drives you through!
What are you particularly proud of since starting your career with UHY Hacker Young?
Due to the intensity of the ACA courses and the amount of material you need to learn, I am extremely proud every time I pass an exam. It shows that all your hard work has really paid off.
