Since starting my training contract in December 2004 I have had exposure to a diverse range of clients; my assignments have ranged from AIM listed groups to family run companies - each of which have their own challenges which I have had to overcome! Joining a firm of this size has allowed me to take on responsibility at an early stage in my career which means I am continually learning with each new assignment I am sent on.
I joined the London office three years ago and recently passed my final exams, becoming an ACA. Having completed my training I am now able to apply the technical knowledge I have gained through my studies to the different scenarios which I encounter on each job.
A typical assignment would involve meeting with the assignment manager in order to understand the client’s needs and requirements. I would then be involved in the planning process where I would assess the high risk areas where to focus audit testing as well as evaluating the company’s system and controls. The team would then visit the client which often means staying away from London, a part of the job I enjoy as I have been able to visit different areas across the UK. The completion of the audit generally occurs back in the office, this is when I would finalise the Financial Statements and clear any outstanding issues brought up from our fieldwork. In my role as an audit senior, I’ve been given quite a lot of freedom and responsibility to work on clients on my own, meaning I have to use my own initiative to get work completed.
UHY Hacker Young is a friendly and sociable firm with outings to the local sites organised by the audit staff most Fridays evenings! This has been a great opportunity to get to know new recruits and other year groups. Being an avid football player I also play for the London office 5-aside football team which meets once a week. This has been a great opportunity to get to know colleagues from other departments, in addition to winning several trophies!
