Why UHY Hacker Young?
Graduating from the University of Birmingham was an exciting but daunting experience. The uncertainty of my future made me realise just how important my first job would be. UHY Hacker Young’s reputation as a leading accountancy organisation promised a training contract where I would have exposure in a highly professional environment and be dealing, day on day, with a wide breadth of clients.
What training is provided?
There are two dimensions to my training; my formal college training where I study independently, and the practical experience I gain on a daily basis. During my first year, I spent a number of weeks at college, studying various topics. I enjoy being at college as I have the opportunity to meet other trainees from different firms. When I am back in the office, I am able to apply what I have learnt in college to real life companies. This practical experience greatly enhances my progress and understanding.
What does your job entail?
I prepare accounts for a wide range of clients, big and small. Being commercially aware and managing my time effectively are the key factors in carrying out my role. Variety within the job comes from the regular onsite visits to client premises where we carry out audit field work. This is interesting because I get to experience first hand how businesses operate and meet the people who make it possible.
What's the atmosphere like in the office?
The office is situated in one of the most picturesque parts of Nottingham and is only a 5 minute walk from the city centre. With around 30 employees, the Nottingham office thrives on a dynamic office atmosphere. Help is always on hand in the office which is good to know when starting a new job. The company is socially very active, with regular events organised throughout the year. One in particular is the annual student dinner which is always a giggle! You can get as involved as you like.
