Now I am in my third year of my training contract at UHY Torgersens and my role has changed significantly since joining in 2005.
The jobs I am responsible for are wide ranging and have included areas such as preparing financial statements for limited companies, including preparing draft corporation tax computations, audits of limited companies and charities, preparation and audit of solicitor accounts, VAT returns and management accounting for solicitors and credit unions.
I feel this broad range of experience is invaluable as I have an understanding of how differing organisations operate, and it also means that no two jobs are the same.
There is a strong support network which allows for good advice and technical knowledge when required. The job always remains a learning curve with challenges arising on a daily basis, but there is always somebody on hand to offer advice and guidance, which works both ways as I am always on hand to offer the same.
One of the main areas I have become involved with in the last year is the audit of solicitors based on the Solicitors Accounts Rules. This is quite a specialist area and varies from the audit of companies as the reports are prepared for solicitors’ own regulatory body.
I have also gained experience in managing staff, as certain jobs require more junior members to complete some of the work. The work the juniors need to carry out needs to be carefully explained and reviewed, alongside carrying out my own work. As you can see, personal development and growth is encouraged as much as technical knowledge.
The final year exams were intense and made for hard work and some late nights, made even more intense after a hard day in the office. However the sense of achievement and relief on passing the final exams made it all worthwhile.
