Describe a typical day at UHY Hacker Young:
There is no such thing as a typical day at UHY Hacker Young, which is one of the best things about the job if you like variety. From week to week you’ll find yourself either at a client in or outside London, at college or in the office.
What made you choose UHY Hacker Young?
UHY Hacker Young is a good sized mid-tier firm; it is large enough to enable you to work with a variety of people, yet small enough to offer exposure to many different clients and provide a decent overview of the audit process.
Do you tend to work late into the evenings or a lot of weekends?
On occasion overtime is expected, this tends to be a couple of hours in the evenings during the completion of an audit. Weekend work is scarce but is sometimes required. However your colleagues are well aware that you’ll have exams to study for and accommodate for this as much as possible.
What makes a good auditor/accountant?
A good auditor is personable, sociable and confident when addressing new people. In addition a good auditor is open to different types of tasks and flexible with regards to the location they are asked to work in. The ability to work well in a team is essential.
What is the atmosphere like at UHY Hacker Young?
The atmosphere at UHY is, in my opinion, the best thing about the company. I felt instantly welcomed when I joined, and with the interesting mix of people and conversation, there is never a dull day in the office!
What do you like most about your role?
I like that I am always learning something new. With every new job, I have worked with a completely different team and have been given different responsibilities. It is an ideal role for somebody who enjoys being constantly challenged.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
The most challenging thing is, by far, balancing revising for the exams, working and having a social life. Although you have to be willing to dedicate a significant portion of your spare time to studying, this tends to come in phases, and when you’re in between exams you’ll embrace every second of free time you have!
What do you hope to do when you have finished your qualification?
The ACA qualification opens many doors within the finance function of any industry. Opportunities for career development range from continuing within audit progressing to a managerial position, to becoming a financial controller at any company with a finance department.
Is it difficult to balance your exams and work commitments?
Finding a balance is difficult but certainly possible. As all of your colleagues are, or have been, in the same situation as you, they are extremely understanding and accommodating, allowing you to focus on your studies when exams are approaching.
What are you particularly proud of since starting your career with UHY Hacker Young?
I am most proud of having passed all of my exams to date whilst working on a high profile client. It was quite stressful at times but very fulfilling when you get your results and its good news!
