What made you choose UHY Hacker Young?

After looking at a number of different accountancy firms UHY stood out to me as they offered a great package which would allow me to work with clients of all sizes ranging from listed companies to small sole traders and also get support and guidance during my studies.

Is it difficult to balance your exams and work commitments?

I feel I have managed to balance the two well, as UHY are very accommodating before exams by ensuring that you have enough time to prepare for exams. Also, before exams you tend to spend a couple of weeks at college revising which helps.

What do you like most about your role?

I like the fact that you are given responsibility pretty much straight away when you start; for example, during my first couple of weeks I was given the responsibility to do an accounts preparation and also go out to a client and assist with an audit. This made me feel a part of the team almost instantly.

Since then I have been given many other assignments which have challenged me which I have also enjoyed. Another aspect of the job which I have enjoyed is traveling out to clients around the North West and undertaking audit work, which has allowed me to use the knowledge gained from being at college.

Do you tend to work late into the evenings or a lot of weekends?

There are some occasions when you may be required to work a little later but they are rare, I’d say my typical day runs from 9.00am to 5.30pm. Although when preparing for exams I have worked in to the evenings and the weekends as the ACA is a very challenging qualification.

Overall my first year at UHY has flown by - I am looking forward to the next few years and hope to progress well with my exams and gaining experience along the way.
