Describe a typical day in the audit department:
In my view there is no ‘typical’ day, which is one of the best parts of the job! Each audit that I’ve undertaken has had its own unique attributes and challenges. I suppose key things which are common to all audits and are vital daily activities include working closely with the audit team and client, providing high quality results and being proactive in getting the job done.
What made you choose UHY Hacker Young?
I was interested in the role at UHY Hacker Young for a number of reasons. Primarily, I felt that because the firm has a wide range of clients, both in industry and size, it would be an excellent opportunity to gain end-to-end knowledge of the audit process. In addition to this, during the application process I really felt that the culture and atmosphere at the company was one where I would thrive.
Do you work late in the evenings or are you home in time for Hollyoaks?
Since the creation of channel 4 plus one, I usually manage to get home in time for Hollyoaks! I think that there are times when all members of the team need to pull together and where necessary do overtime to hit their deadlines. However in the first year at UHY Hacker Young I’ve found overtime to be the exception rather than the rule.
What kind of support is available to you as a trainee?
Once a trainee joins UHY Hacker Young they are assigned a mentor, a manager and a partner. All are available to offer support and advice and will be involved in the development of the trainee throughout their training contract. There is also additional support through college to help support each trainee through their professional stage studies. This includes tutoring, revision sessions, one to one advice and the provision of books, revision packs and practice mock exams.
What makes a good auditor?
- I feel that there are several key attributes to a good auditor;
- Communication/team working abilities – helps to build good relationships with the client and your team and ensures everyone is fully up-to-date with progress and issues.
- Time management – this ensures it is possible to conduct audits in an efficient manner whilst providing excellent quality results.
- Accounting knowledge and commercial awareness – are vital in understanding the needs of the client and the requirements of the audit.
